What a perfectly positive Reading Assembly we had today with Mr Prior, who began by reading The Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Pena, a story all about a boy called CJ and his Nana who enjoy a rather meaningful bus ride in the rain. Nana answers lots of CJ’s questions about life and his perceptions, which changed his outlook and really made him see the world from a different perspective. This story got us all thinking about our own perceptions and Mr Prior taught us the glass is half full/empty theory, also explaining that his own Nan would tell him, “it doesn’t matter if your glass is half full or empty, be grateful that you have a glass and that you have something in it!” Wise words indeed…
We then looked at different scenarios and discussed alternate perceptions with a more positive outlook. Here is what we came up with:
Scenario: | Positive outlook: |
It’s raining outside |
“Dance/jump in puddles” “Enjoy drawing indoors” |
I couldn’t play in goal | “At least I can play at all” |
I couldn’t work with the person that I wanted to |
“There’s always a next time” “At least you have a partner to work with” “You might learn something new from somebody else” |
My match was cancelled | “It will be rescheduled” |
The other team were better than us |
“See it as a challenge” “Take a look at what they are good at and try to do the same” |
I have to go to bed early |
“A good chance to rest” “Tomorrow may be a better day because of it” |
Thank you Mr Prior for reminding us of the importance of positive thinking and by relating this to our daily lives. It’s true to say that we were all 2%ers today, which of course we have all become so good at. A refresher like today’s assembly is a great excuse for us to exercise our positive powers of thinking.
I would like to have that book beacause I really enjoyed the book
