In English over the last two weeks, Year 6 have been learning all about poetry. We explored the poem Red Fox by Robert Macfarlane (which you can listen to here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2LVwUA7fPg ) and started our learning off by discussing how the poem made us feel, what we thought it was about, and if there was a deeper meaning to the poem. We discussed how the poem shows the wild world of the fox and how the fox could be a metaphor for humans and their behaviour. One thing the class really enjoyed about the poem was the rhyming pattern as it created a steady rhythm when they read it aloud.
Over the next few lessons, the class worked extremely hard to create their own stanzas in the style of Red Fox. We explored the poetic features, metaphors, noun chains and the rhyming pattern so that we could create a similar rhythm with our own poems. After lots of practise, resilience and hard work, the class created their own final poem which incorporated all of the features we had explored in the lessons.
I am so impressed with how hard the children have worked on their poems and it has been so enjoyable to read their poems and hear them perform them to the class. Look out for our blog post next week where you will be able to hear some of the children perform their poems and see more photos of our finished work!
Well done Year 6 – you should be really proud of yourselves!
It was hard to rhyme it 🤣
