Setting Sail in Year 2!

It was time to prepare to set sail on our own voyages of exploration this week!

In one of our recent DT lessons, we looked at images of the three ships that were used for Columbus’ 1492 expedition: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. We were then tasked with designing our own explorer ships which would meet the design criteria below.

Design criteria:

  • Your ship must be sturdy.
  • It must be able to float.
  • It must include at least one sail.

It must also look like a ship!

This Wednesday, we set to work! We referred to our designs which listed the key materials/components and equipment that we would need, thinking carefully about these materials and the tools that we would use, in order to achieve the best results. A few of the tools we used include: scissors, a hole punch and a glue gun.

Finally, it was time to test our ships (which all floated!) before evaluating our finished work against our design criteria and reflecting on the making process.

Great work Year 2, you all demonstrated your ability to work reciprocally and we had lots of fun along the way!

  1. WOW! The boats you have made look fantastic. Well done, Year 2. I’m glad none of them capsized!
