Southill vs St Augustine’s
Wow. All I can say is this game should have been on Sky Sports as it was a belter!
After the heavy defeat to Chickerell where the children let their heads drop in the final 10 minutes, Southill were keen to bounce back and prove just how resilient they were…
It didn’t start well for Southill though. After 10 minutes, we found ourselves 1-0 down after a low shot was deflected into the bottom corner. This was a perfect opportunity to see if the children had learnt anything from the Chickerell game and, my word, they did!
The goal seemed to galvanize the team and they started fighting for every ball and played some neat and tidy passing on a small pitch. After a whirlwind 15 minutes of football, Southill scored four goals – two of which were scored directly from a corner!
We knew that St Augustine’s would put up a fight in the second half and they did. A corner resulted in one goal and yet another went in after a low shot took a nasty bobble which wrong-footed the keeper, making it 4-3. With 5 minutes to go, Southill knew they had to dig deep. Some hard tackling in midfield led to our striker capitalizing on a through ball which ended up in a goal making the FINAL SCORE…
SOUTHILL 5 – 3 ST AUGUSTINE’S
I am so unbelievably proud of the team today. They played so effectively together and withstood heavy pressure in the second half which took nerve. Well done, boys! A match that will live in the memory for a long time…
A huge thank you to St Augustine’s for hosting and for giving us a great game. Thanks to everybody from our Southill community who came and cheered us all until the bitter end. And finally, thank you to the two teams for giving us such a great game of football.
