Southill vs St Nicks

Southill vs St Nicks

Our first football match of the year took place between Southill and St Nicks on home turf. Not only was this the first match to kick-off the calendar year, but it was also the first match that some of the children have ever played in!

The match began with both teams trying to control possession. After 12 minutes, St Nicks found themselves 0-1 up after a low driven shot found the bottom corner. Southill responded brilliantly after a ball into the attacking third was cleared to the edge of the box and a blistering strike sailed over the keeper and into the roof of the net. Southill continued to pile the pressure on, hitting the post twice. However, St Nicks caught us on the counter-attack and managed to make it 1-2 just before half time.

A few early chances came our way in the second half, one shot just sailing wide of the post and another hitting the crossbar, however St Nicks were also beginning to create chances. A swift counter-attack caused mayhem in the box and St Nicks slotted the ball into the corner past our keeper, making it 1-3. A few heads began to drop, and St Nicks continued to grow in confidence. This meant that despite some heroic saves by our goalkeeper in the latter stages of the game, we shipped another three goals meaning that the final score was:

Southill 1 – 6 St Nicks

Considering some players have never even played a football match before, the fact that we were able to score and carve out so many chances means that it gives me great optimism for what the future has in store. A huge thank you to parents, carers and ex-pupils for coming to cheer on the mighty Southill. We really value your support.
