Today Year 5 had an amazing opportunity to visit one of our local secondary schools, All Saints, for a STEAM experience day! STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths, all core subjects vital to our understanding of the world and how it works. STEAM subjects inspire curiosity, promote creativity and exploration and connect our problem-solving to real-world solutions.
This was all evident in our sessions today which began with an Art lesson looking at colour and how it links with our emotions. We created different images which express emotions using colour, shape and different pattern and media.
After a quick biscuit break, we then headed to the Engineering department for a session on woodworking using saws, vices and tools to create our own keyring! We used specific dimensions to measure, cut and smooth our keyring into a shape which can also be used as a tablet holder, so we can read the blog with ease!
Our afternoon sessions were in the Science department, beginning with an experiment into air resistance using paper and a zip wire. Ask us our conclusion on how the size and shape of a piece of paper changes the speed it falls…!
We finished our day with an explosive chemistry lesson looking at carbonates and how we can see and measure chemical reactions. A little demonstration of a hydrochloric gas explosion (really a little pop!) finished the day nicely!
It’s safe to say each and every one of us has gained something from today, whether it be an increased interest in a STEAM subject or whether it is a reassurance that secondary school is not as daunting as some of us initially thought. We have all listened well, worked reciprocally and have reflected on our thoughts about moving on as we get older.
We were, once again, praised highly by every member of staff we worked with and received a special thanks from Mrs Jeanes, Vice Principal that we were outstanding in our behaviour and participation. Well done Year 5 and thank you for such an enjoyable day!
I really enjoyed today, my favourite part was engineering.
That was brilliant Florence, you all made great keyring!
My favourite part was chemistry I wanted to make my friends heads blow off
Oh and I liked science
Engineering was hard because you had to mark everything up
