Summer Term Forest School Session 2. Tadpoles, plants and nests!

We have all found a ‘Magic Spot’ where we can just sit and be quiet in nature.  We used our senses to tune into our wonderful Woodland walk and Forest School area.

At this time of the year, birds are making nests ready for egg laying and bringing up their hatched chicks.  The challenge was to build a nest off the ground to avoid predators,  out of natural materials, which would hold a clutch of 4 eggs, which were actually 4 small stones.  Our nests also had to withstand the windy conditions (a little shake of the tree!).  Everyone thought very carefully about how to create their nests and if they wanted a challenge, could use just one hand because after all, a bird does just have one beak to do all the work!  Most nests withstood the wind test and managed to stay put safely.    We reflected on what we were round of and what improvements could be made.  Fantastic work Forest Schoolers!

Then it was free choice time.  We had a good look at the pond as it is full of new life.  From greater water boatman and tadpoles, to damselfly nymphs.  The keys were a great help to identify our pond wildlife.

And of course, lots of other activities to choose from: planting potatoes and sunflowers, writing up our Forest Friendship Code, the muddy kitchen, hammocks and also playing imposter.

Next week, we are starting fire lighting skills and whittling.
