Super Scratchers
This afternoon, Year 4 began their new unit of work in computing. This half term, our focus will be on developing the children’s ability to code using a programme called Scratch. By the end of this half term, the children will be aiming to programme their very own online game. How exciting! Over the next few weeks, the children will learn how to use repetition, animation, looping and modification on Scratch. We will then play some retro games so that the children can fully appreciate how code has been used to create them. We will look at iconic games such as Tetris, Pong, Space Invaders and Super Mario and the children will be able to identify not only the sprite in the game but also how code would have been programmed to create certain aspects of the game.
Today’s lesson focused on repetition. The children used step-by-step instructions in order to create various 2-Dimensional shapes on Scratch. They learnt how to use the pen tool, repeat, rotate and movement. It was a really fun lesson and I was majorly impressed with how the children were able to follow instructions carefully and rectify problems when they occurred.
In case children are keen to continue coding at home, Scratch is a FREE website. Follow the link to continue developing your skills at home… Scratch – Imagine, Program, Share (mit.edu)
Well done, Year 4! I cannot wait for our next computing lesson.
