This half term Year 1 are learning all about Tennis!
Our tennis sessions are broken down in 3 key parts:
- Warm up
- Skills building/development
- Cool down & putting away equipment
In the warm up children are learning about the effects of PE on their bodies. We have been talking about how our heart rate increases as our heart pumps blood around our bodies quicker and why it is important to warm up. In the photos below you can see us warming up after checking our heart rates before exercise.
During skill building activities children are working on mastering basic movements including running, throwing and catching, as well as developing agility and co-ordination. This week we have been using our co-ordination skills when catching using our dominant hand. Some of us even progressed onto using our less dominant hand and adding challenge through standing further away from our partners.
At the end of the session we have been cooling down. This helps our heart rate to slow down steadily which is better for our muscles than just stopping. We have been putting our equipment back away in the correct bags and storing them so that they do not get damaged – this is what all professional athletes and sportsmen and women do!
This week we have been lucky enough to work with Year 6, who are also learning about tennis this half term. Below you can see lots of pictures of us working reciprocally. The Year 6 children were able to act as ‘coaches’ helping us with our throwing and catching techniques and reminding us about our racket grip.
Well done Year 1 and Year 6 – another great tennis session!
We will be Wimbledon Ready in no time!
What a brilliant idea! How lovely for them to play and learn with the Year 6 children. George loved it.
I had so much fun with year 1
