The Magic of Multiplication
We very much enjoyed our maths lesson today as we began to explore how multiplying by 10 actually works. When asked at the beginning of the lesson how we multiply by 10, most children felt that you ‘just add a zero on the end’. Whilst in some cases that might work, it doesn’t always…
Today, using the maths resources, we explored how a number does in fact get ten times bigger. Using a combination of place value grids and counters, we could physically move the counters and see how the number changes. This will really help us when looking at decimals later this term.
Later on in the lesson, the children then applied this method of working out how to multiply by 10 to a whole host of other similar questions and used their journal to explain their understanding.
Well done, Year 4. A very rewarding maths lesson indeed.
