The Year 5 Olympic Games – A Legendary Battle of Skill and Strength!
As our thrilling journey through Ancient Greece reached its grand finale, we arrived at the highlight of our topic—the Olympic Games! With excitement in the air, our young historians dived into the fascinating world of the ancient Olympics, uncovering jaw-dropping facts about this legendary event.
Did you know that athletes competed completely naked, covered in olive oil? Or that women were strictly forbidden from competing—or even watching? The children amazed me with their knowledge! They also discovered that the events were often brutal, a sacred truce was declared across Greek city-states during the games, and that this grand spectacle took place every four years in Olympia to honor Zeus, the king of the gods.
Armed with their newfound knowledge, the children were divided into five mighty city-states: Sparta, Athens, Olympia, Elis, and Argos. They were then invited to step into the sandals of ancient athletes and compete in our very own Year 5 Olympic Games! The events? A thrilling mix of javelin, diaulos race, discus, and the ever-dramatic chariot racing.
The atmosphere was electric! The children gave it their all, demonstrating skill, determination, and sportsmanship. It was heartwarming to hear the cheers ringing out across the field, even as city-states rooted for their rivals. The highlight? The chariot racing—an edge-of-your-seat spectacle that had everyone on their feet!
A huge well done to all our competitors for embracing this topic with such enthusiasm. The Olympic spirit was truly alive in Year 5, and what a fantastic way to wrap up our Ancient Greece adventure!
