This week we have taken our learning about properties of materials further and have been mixing and separating solids and liquids. Having learnt how to mix a soluble material to create a solvent, we have now learnt how to separate the solvent so we are left with the solids and liquids again!
We were tasked with the job of cleaning some very dirty water we had been given and to begin with, we didn’t think we could do it – that water was extremely dirty! Yet after some learning about filtration – the method used to filter solids from a liquid, we decided we could make our own filtration systems to clean the water.
Take a look at how well we did! We used funnels, sieves, filter paper and cotton wool to form a process of filtering, leaving the residue (solids) in the filter paper and the filtrate (liquid) in the beaker. It took a couple of turns through the filter but we feel the end results are amazing!
Who would have through that was the same water to begin with! Well done Year 5, amazing resourceful filtering to turn water clear enough to see through!
