Year 1 Scientists

This week we have started a new project about ‘Everyday Materials’. This project focuses on different science objectives linking to identifying materials and their properties.

Over the week we have been exploring different materials, looking at objects around the school and talking about the material that they are made off. We went on a ‘wood hunt’ around the school grounds and managed to find lots of different objects such as the trim trail, benches and fences that are all made of wood. This is just one of the materials we have looked out, we also identified materials such as glass, plastic, fabric and metal when looking at different objects in our classroom.

Being able to identify materials and their properties is an important skill. It helps us to choose materials that are best for the job and begin to link this to how and why they have been made. Below you can see use looking at different materials and grouping them. We have also been looking at how different types of questions can be answered. For example, what material is the object made from? Why do you think this material has been chosen? How has the object been made?

A great week exploring materials and their properties – well done Year 1!
