Design & Technology

Design is not just what it looks like and feels like; design is how it works.
– Steve Jobs

Why teach Design and Technology?

At Southill Primary, we recognise the importance of Design and Technology in preparing our pupils to become creative, resourceful and innovative thinkers. Our DT curriculum empowers children to design purposeful, functional and appealing products that solve real and relevant problems, both individually and collaboratively. Through practical, hands-on experiences, children develop the technical knowledge, skills and resilience needed to think and work like designers, engineers and makers.

Through our comprehensive Design and Technology curriculum, we aim to nurture curiosity, imagination and problem-solving skills. Children are encouraged to explore ideas, take creative risks, and learn from mistakes - developing perseverance and adaptability along the way. They research, design, make and evaluate with purpose, gaining a sense of pride and ownership in their creations. By combining creativity with practical application, pupils learn how products evolve to meet human needs and how design impacts everyday life in a constantly changing world.

The impact of our DT curriculum is evident in the enthusiasm and confidence of our learners as they bring their ideas to life. Their outcomes showcase not only skill and precision but also imagination, originality and care. Through engaging projects across the strands of construction, textiles, and cooking and nutrition, pupils gain a deeper understanding of materials, mechanisms, sustainability and healthy living.

Furthermore, Design and Technology at Southill Primary fosters teamwork, communication and respect for different ideas and perspectives. It connects children to their community and the wider world, showing them that good design can make a difference.

Through our Bright Futures Curriculum, pupils develop the values of resilience, resourcefulness, reciprocity and reflectiveness as they work through the design process. They learn to persevere through challenges, adapt their ideas, and evaluate their work thoughtfully - preparing them not only to succeed as young designers but to approach the wider world with creativity, confidence and a sense of purpose.
