A Day on the Farm

What a fantastic, fun-filled day we have had today at Travellers Rest Inn!

We started the day off inside the grain shed, where farmer George explained to us about the different types of grain that is grown on the farm, showing us examples and letting us handle them so we could see and feel them for ourselves. We paid particular attention to the rapeseed and the wheat as we were going to using these later in our cooking.

Next we went on a tractor and trailer ride around the farm. Stopping off to see the cows up close and personal before feeding the sheep their breakfast... who would have thought that sheep ate toast?!

It was amazing to see the children interacting with the animals, gaining valuable hands on experience whilst learning about the plants that have been grown in these fields to feed the animals and protect the land.

After brekkie with the sheep it was time to jump back onto the tractor and trailer and make our way through some woodland. We learnt about the hazelnut trees, looking at their leaves and trying to find some of the nuts on the floor - although it looked like the squirrels had beaten us too it! We also visited some of George's farmland that he uses for grazing. He showed us different plants, such as turnips and potatoes and explained how the animals enjoy munching on these throughout the winter months. He also showed us some of the other plants that are commonly found on farms and surrounding woodlands - such as sunflowers, bluebells and clover.

After this hungry work we made our way back to the farm buildings to wash our hands and have our lunch.

The afternoon was spent in The Hen House Kitchen Classroom.

George and Penny showed us how they grind the grain to make flour, and crush the rapeseed to make oil. Both of which we used in our cooking.

Throughout the afternoon we took part in 3 activities;

- preparing the veg for our soup

- making bread 'dippers'

- sorting foods that can be found on the farm or from around the world

We had SO much fun, it was brilliant to see everyone really engaged in the learning, especially the cooking!

Whilst our soup was bubbling away and our bread was cooking we popped up to the hen house to see if we could find any eggs - luckily there was one freshly laid for us to collect!!

Finally, we headed back to The Hen House Kitchen Classroom to enjoy our delicious food.

An ENORMOUS well done Year 2. Myself and all of the staff were really proud of you today and Penny and George said it was a pleasure to have you there! Can we do it all again tomorrow?!
