History Brought to Life Through Writing

In our recent writing lessons, we have been exploring the powerful and moving book Freedom Bird by Jerdine Nolen. Set during slavery in the time of the American Civil War, the story follows siblings Millicent and John, who work on a plantation and endure cruel and unjust treatment.

A particularly harrowing moment sees the overseer, Sorenson, violently whip a harmless bird out of the sky. This shocking act becomes a turning point in the story and sparks deep discussion in our classroom. The children were tasked with writing a persuasive letter to Millicent and John, warning them of the grave dangers they would face if they attempted to help the injured bird under the cover of night. The letters were incredibly thoughtful and emotive, vividly describing the possible repercussions and harsh punishments the children might suffer if they were caught.

We then turned our attention to the inspirational life of Harriet Tubman. Born into slavery, Harriet escaped to freedom and went on to risk her life time and time again, helping thousands of others escape via the Underground Railroad. The children were challenged to write a biography about this remarkable woman, and they rose to the occasion beautifully. Their writing captured her courage, determination, and legacy, producing some truly outstanding pieces of work.

Our next writing adventure is just around the corner as we set sail with Kasper, Prince of Cats and uncover the fascinating story of the Titanic. All aboard for another unforgettable journey through history and imagination!
