Mastering Multiple Methods for Multiplication
Over the past few weeks, Year 5 have truly been putting their maths skills to the test as we have ventured into the world of multiplication and not just times tables! The children have explored a range of increasingly challenging calculations, including multiplying a 4-digit number by a 1-digit number, a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number, and some have even tackled 3- and 4-digit numbers multiplied by a 2-digit number.
We began our journey with the grid method, focusing on partitioning numbers, multiplying each part systematically, and then combining the totals to find the final answer. This approach helped to deepen the children’s understanding of how multiplication works and why it is effective.
More recently, we have moved on to the standard written method, also known as column multiplication. This is perhaps the most efficient approach, and the children rose to the challenge with enthusiasm. To add an extra element of fun, they were greeted with a Nando’s-inspired “menu” of multiplication. Two-digit by two-digit calculations were labelled lemon and herb (mild), 3- and 4-digit numbers multiplied by a 2-digit number turned up the heat to medium, and the extra hot and spicy challenges required children to unpick worded problems and solve multi-step calculations.
Alongside accuracy, a strong emphasis was placed on presentation. Children were reminded that neatly lining up digits is key to being precise and avoiding errors. This focus on organisation has supported them greatly as calculations have become more complex.
Considering that some children were unfamiliar with column multiplication just a week or two ago, the progress they have made has been remarkable. Their confidence, understanding, and resilience have grown enormously.
Well done, Year 5, you should be very proud of yourselves!
