Remembrance Day in Year 5
As part of our PSHE learning, we reflected on Remembrance Day and why it is important to remember those affected by war. We watched videos explaining the symbol of the poppy and listened to the poem “In Flanders Fields”, learning how poppies became a sign of remembrance, hope, and peace.
We explored key vocabulary such as armistice, sacrifice, peace, and respect, and learned that Armistice Day marks the end of World War One on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. We also found out that the official ceremony takes place at The Cenotaph in London, where wreaths are laid in memory of the fallen.
At 11 o’clock, we joined the whole school for a two-minute silence, showing respect and thinking about all those who have served. We discussed the phrase “Lest we forget” and what it means.
Children wore poppies and remembrance wristbands, with all donations going to charity. This linked to our PSHE objectives of showing empathy, understanding and community spirit.
