Squishy Science with Professor Lee

Year 1 were incredibly lucky to spend an afternoon with Professor Lee this week for a very exciting and hands-on science session.

The children investigated special water beads (Orbeez) and explored what happens when tiny solid beads are placed in water. They observed how the beads absorbed the water and grew bigger over time. The children were fascinated to see how something so small could change size and texture!

They talked about how the beads started off hard and tiny, and then became soft and squishy once they had absorbed the water. This led to some fantastic scientific discussions about materials, changes, and how some substances can soak up liquids.

There was lots of careful observing, predicting what might happen next, and plenty of sensory exploration too- which meant yes, we did get a little bit wet and sticky along the way!

Professor Lee explained that the beads are made from a special material that can absorb lots of water, helping the children understand that science is all about investigating how things change.

It was a brilliant afternoon. A huge thank you to Professor Lee for inspiring our Year 1 scientists!
