Great Scott Year 5 have produced some fantastic work!
At Southill we always look for books that inspire us to write. This week in Book Talk we explored a stunning book called The Last Bear written by Hannah Gold. The story follows a girl called April whose father is asked to study climate change in the South Pole. Dad says, “Think of the adventures we will have. We’ll be like Scott of the Antarctic." But April isn't convinced.
We then began discussing who Robert Falcon Scott was and the children were fascinated to learn that he was the second person to reach the South Pole, only just losing out to Roald Amundsen and his Norwegian crew. The children were horrified to discover that Scott and his team perished on the return journey due to hypothermia and starvation.
Year 5 were so intrigued by the topic that we decided to carry out further research and write non-chronological reports about Scott of the Antarctic. The children LOVED this spontaneous writing opportunity and produced cracking work that would make even Scott proud. Well done Year 5.
I'm now going to go and mark their brilliant work. I may be gone some time...
