A Stormy Morning with Professor Lee 🌩️🌪️

This week, we had a very exciting visit from Professor Lee as part of our Mini Professors session, and we spent the whole morning learning all about storms!

We started by exploring different types of extreme weather, focusing on storms driven by strong winds,  such as tornadoes and hurricanes. We learned how they form, what makes them so powerful and where they are most likely to happen. It was fascinating to discover how nature can create such strong forces!

After that, we got hands-on and made our very own tornadoes. We used water, blue food colouring, and a special device from Professor Lee that connects two bottles together. One bottle had water in it, and the other was filled with air. When we flipped the bottles upside down and gave them a swirl, a mini tornado formed inside! It was amazing to watch the spinning vortex appear right in front of us.

Next, we created our own “snow storms” using oil and white paint. First, we poured the paint into the oil and watched as it sank to the bottom. Then came the exciting part - we added a special tablet, which released oxygen bubbles. These bubbles pushed the paint upwards, making it rise and swirl around like a storm! The more tablets we added, the more active and “stormy” it became, which was so fun to see.

To finish off our brilliant morning, we took part in a tornado race. We worked in teams and had to race to get everyone to successfully create a tornado and sit down. It was a fun and energetic way to end the session!

We had such a fantastic time learning about storms in a fun, hands-on way. A big thank you to Professor Lee for such an exciting and memorable visit!
