Firefighters to the Rescue in Year 1! 🚒

Year 1 had the best afternoon ever this week when we welcomed some very special visitors - our local firefighters! 🚒🧯🧑🏻‍🚒

Last half term, we spent time learning all about local heroes, so it was incredibly exciting to meet some real-life heroes in person.

The firefighters arrived in their fire engine with flashing lights and sirens, which was amazing to see and hear up close. They spent time talking to us about their jobs and teaching us all about the important work they do to help keep people safe and what we can do to keep safe.

We learnt that a fire engine is basically one giant, super-helpful toolbox! It carries everything firefighters need to help save people, buildings, land and sometimes, even cats (if they're lucky!).

The children were fascinated by all the equipment stored inside. We saw hoses, safety gear, fire extinguishers and one piece of equipment that looked like a pair of gigantic scissors (they used to cut through tough materials, like a car!). We also learnt about the special red key, which is used to help firefighters gain access through doors in an emergency.

One fact that really surprised us was that firefighters leave their trousers attached to their boots so they can get dressed incredibly quickly when they are called to an emergency. Every second counts!

We were even lucky enough to try on the firefighters' heavy jackets and climb up into the fire engine. It was much higher than we expected!

One firefighter even showed us what he claimed was the most important cupboard in the fire engine... the kettle cupboard! Complete with coffee, tea and hot chocolate supplies 😋.

Then came the best bit of all - the hose! Every child had the chance to hold and spray the hose. We quickly discovered just how powerful it is and I think it's safe to say the school grass has now had a very good watering! There may have also been a few accidental sprays in our direction, leaving some very excited children (and adults!) a little bit wet 😂.

A huge thank you to our local firefighters for taking the time to visit us and give Year 1 such a memorable experience. Your kindness, enthusiasm and dedication inspired us all.

I'm still not quite sure who enjoyed it more – me or the children!
