This week in Year 1, we began learning all about fractions… the hard stuff!

The children have been exploring what it means to find a half. We started by halving shapes and enjoyed lots of practical learning through folding different 2D shapes. Some shapes were easier than others, but triangles definitely proved a little bit tricky!

We have now moved on to sharing and halving quantities. Our lessons have been very hands-on, with lots of “one for me, one for you” to help the children understand how to share equally and make halves. We even helped to share a ladybird’s spots equally, making sure each side had the same number so that the spots were halved fairly.

The children worked fabulously in their new maths spaces and with their new talk partners. It was wonderful to hear so much math discussion, problem-solving, and teamwork as they helped one another to understand the maths.

What a fab day of learning in Year 1!
