From Fins to Feet: Exploring Animals and Humans

Grouping Animals and Discovering What Makes Us Human! 🐸🐟🦁

We have been busy little scientists in Year 1, as we have started our exciting new science learning all about animals and humans!

We kicked off our learning by becoming animal experts and exploring the different groups that animals belong to. We discovered that animals can be grouped into reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds and fish. We had lots of fun spotting the features that make each group special and thinking about which animals belong where.

We then turned our attention to what animals eat. We learnt some very important scientific vocabulary: herbivores eat plants, carnivores eat other animals and omnivores eat both plants and animals. Of course, we decided that the omnivores must be the greedy ones because they get to eat a bit of everything! 😋

Our learning has now taken a very exciting turn as we have started to think about ourselves as humans. To kick-start this part of our learning, we worked together to draw around a child and then talked about the different parts of the human body. We carefully labelled body parts and shared what we already knew.

Then we took our science learning outside! Working with our partners, we drew around each other and used our scientific knowledge to label different parts of the body. There were lots of giggles, some very funny-shaped drawings and plenty of impressive scientific vocabulary being used!

We are already showing that scientists can be curious, observant and great at working together. We can't wait to see what else we discover about animals - and ourselves - as our learning continues! 🔎
