Healthy Snacks… The Year 1 Way
What a busy week Year 1 have had! A second blog of the week! 😂
We completed our DT topic all about healthy snacks! What better way to learn than by making delicious fruit kebabs - colourful, tasty and healthy too!
The children began by learning about the importance of hygiene and washing their hands properly to get rid of germs. We learnt that we should sing “Happy Birthday” twice while washing our hands to make sure we wash them for an effective amount of time.
Next, the children explored different techniques for safely chopping food using a knife. They practised using the “bridge” technique, where our fingers make a tunnel shape for the food to go underneath and the “claw” technique, which helps keep our fingertips safely tucked away.
Once the children had learnt these important skills, they designed their own fruit kebabs on paper plates and were ready to bring their ideas to life in the afternoon. They carefully used their chopping skills before building their colourful fruit skewers.
Finally, (the best part!) the children got to enjoy their tasty creations! Everyone had lots of fun and showed fantastic listening, teamwork and independence throughout the activity.
A special thank you to Mrs Aitken, Mrs Harris and the parents who were able to help out and support us during the afternoon ☺️.
