Jekyll vs Hyde! Year 5’s Incredible Character Challenge

This week, Year 5 have embarked on an exciting literary journey, diving into the mysterious and thrilling world of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. We kicked off our Book Talk by reading a gripping section of the story and tackling some tricky comprehension questions. The children showed great resilience, using their detective skills to unpick the deeper meaning behind the text.

During the rest of our reading sessions, we took our learning a step further with a fascinating character study! Each child was given a picture of the two central figures—Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde—and set the challenge of writing two contrasting character descriptions. One painted Dr. Jekyll as the kindest and most brilliant scientist imaginable, while the other revealed Mr. Hyde as the most terrifying and wicked villain of all! To make their writing even more powerful, the children skilfully used hyperbole (exaggeration) and superlatives to create vivid, entertaining, and memorable descriptions.

I’m sure you’ll agree that their writing looks absolutely incredible! The creativity, attention to detail, and expressive language on display are truly impressive. Well done, Year 5—we can’t wait to see what you produce next!
