Learning Left and Right!

To start off this half-term, Year 1 have been having lots of fun learning about position and direction in Maths!

We started off by learning about quarter turns, half turns, three-quarter turns and full turns. We became programmed robots and did lots of spinning and turning to help us understand how each turn works.

Today, we moved on to learning about left and right. First, we drew around each of our hands to create our own direction maps - this proved quite tricky when drawing with the non-dominant hand! We then labelled our hands and drew arrows to show which way was left and which way was right.

We also learnt a sneaky little trick to help us remember! When you hold both hands up in front of you, your left hand makes an ‘L’ shape with your thumb and finger. The children thought this was a brilliant way to help them remember which hand is which!

Why not ask your child to tell you all about their learning? See if they can show you their left and right, or challenge them to demonstrate a quarter turn, half turn, three-quarter turn or full turn!

We can't wait to continue our learning about position and direction over the next couple of weeks.
