New Year 5 - Hockey
🏑 Pass, Move, Support!
We had a brilliant hockey session today, with the children learning how to apply their attacking skills under pressure. The focus wasn’t just on controlling the ball—it was about looking up, thinking quickly and working together as a team.
Our players practised three important passing skills: pointing their stick towards where they wanted the ball to go, and stepping forward as they passed to generate more power and accuracy.
We then put these skills into game situations, where the children had to make quick decisions under pressure. Could they keep their heads up? Could they find a teammate in space? Could they decide whether to pass, move or keep possession? There was lots of energetic play and some fantastic teamwork! 🏃♀️🏃♂️💨
Our Whole Child focus was just as important as our hockey skills.
Socially, we challenged the children to support their teammates, communicating and helping one another during activities.
Emotionally, we focused on showing empathy and understanding when somebody makes a mistake. Hockey moves quickly, and mistakes are part of learning. We encouraged the children to respond positively, help their teammates recover and get ready for the next play.
Our thinking challenge was to make quick decisions. As the pressure increased, the children had to scan the pitch, recognise their options and choose what to do—all in a matter of seconds!
