Southill Shines at Education Conference

A Standing Ovation for Southill

Following our recent poetry performance on the Weymouth Pavilion stage, we were delighted to be invited to perform our poem once again at the Kingston Maurward Education Conference.

Our performance was so impressive that, out of all the schools who took part and alongside performances from across Dorset, Southill Primary was specially selected for the children's passion, stage presence and outstanding performance skills. We are incredibly proud of them!

Even more excitingly, the children performed in front of an audience of approximately 400 deputy headteachers and headteachers from across the county. What an honour and a fantastic opportunity! Of course, they absolutely SMASHED it and received a standing ovation for their incredible performance.

After taking to the stage, we turned the day into a wonderful learning opportunity. In PSHE this half term, we have been exploring the question, "What jobs would we like?" It was fascinating to hear our lovely tour guide, Sarah, talk about the huge variety of careers available at Kingston Maurward. From equine vets to tree surgeons, landscape gardeners to animal carers, the children were amazed by the range of opportunities on offer.

Sarah then led us around the animal park, where we watched goats charging at one another and met some calmer residents, including alpacas and donkeys. We also encountered a rather grumpy pig and a very loud goose, who may even have given Year 5 a run for their money!

After exploring the animal park, we ventured through the beautiful gardens, taking in the stunning scenery, picturesque lakes and impressive landscapes that Kingston Maurward has to offer.

Finally, we tucked into our lunch and enjoyed some well-earned free time, playing outdoor games such as tug-of-war, table tennis, jumbo Jenga and hoop toss.

It was a whirlwind of a morning and I could not be prouder of the children. They thoroughly deserved this special trip after delivering such an outstanding performance.

A huge thank you to Sharon Peel, who kindly put our name forward to perform at the Education Conference after watching our wonderful performance at the Pavilion. Special thanks also go to Mrs. Walkinshaw and Mrs. Murray for supervising the children and to Sarah at Kingston Maurward for providing such an engaging day of exploration and learning.

It was fantastic to hear the children discussing what they might like to do when they are older. For some, the visit reinforced existing ambitions and, for others, it may have inspired a career path they had never previously considered.
