Southill Show Swagger at the Weymouth Dodgeball Tournament
Southill Show Swagger at the Weymouth Dodgeball Tournament
After coming agonisingly close to winning the dodgeball tournament last academic year, the same group of pupils had the opportunity to avenge their narrow defeat in the final as they travelled to Redlands to compete in the Weymouth Dodgeball Tournament.
Southill would face four other teams, playing each of them twice across the afternoon.
1... 2... 3... Dodgeball!
Here are the results:
Southill 10–0 St John's
Southill 8–2 Wyke Regis
Southill 8–2 Beechcroft
Southill 9–1 Conifers
St John's 0–10 Southill
Wyke Regis 8–2 Southill
Beechcroft 6–4 Southill
Conifers 2–8 Southill
Southill amassed a staggering 18 points, winning 6 of their 8 matches. However, Beechcroft had also won 6 matches from their first 7 fixtures, leaving them with one final game to play.
Their last match would be against Wyke Regis. A draw or a win for Beechcroft would be enough to secure the tournament title. A victory for Wyke Regis, however, would see Southill lift the trophy thanks to their superior set-point difference across the afternoon.
We watched nervously as the decisive match unfolded before our eyes. After a series of intense and closely fought sets, the score stood at 4–4 with just one set remaining.
As the final set progressed, things were looking bleak. Wyke Regis had only one player left on court, while Beechcroft still had three. Remarkably, the lone Wyke Regis player managed to eliminate two opponents, leaving a dramatic 1v1 showdown with just 10 seconds remaining.
A draw would not be enough. Then, in the dying seconds, the impossible happened. The final Beechcroft player was eliminated, giving Wyke Regis a 6–4 victory and crowning Southill as Weymouth Dodgeball Champions!
A massive thank you to Weymouth College for providing referees to officiate the matches, and to Kate Lloyd for kindly helping to transport the children to Redlands.
A huge thank you also goes to Mr. Frampton for capturing some fantastic action shots throughout the afternoon.
Finally, congratulations to the team for demonstrating outstanding tenacity, team spirit, and a never-give-up attitude. Your determination and resilience were rewarded in the most dramatic fashion possible, making this a tournament to remember!
