Year 5 Writing – Inspired by Firebird

Year 5 are thoroughly enjoying our current writing unit, based on the beautiful book Firebird by Saviour Pirotta and Catherine Hyde.

We have been exploring the rich language, characters, settings and themes within the story. The text has provided us with lots of opportunities to develop our writing skills, while also encouraging the children to think creatively and carefully about the choices an author makes.

Throughout the unit, we have been building our writer’s toolkit. The children have been working hard to create vivid descriptions, choose ambitious vocabulary, develop characters, use dialogue effectively and vary their sentence structures. We have also been focusing on the importance of editing and improving our work so that every word earns its place!

The most exciting part is now underway: using all of these skills to plan and write our very own stories inspired by Firebird. The children are going to be taking ideas and techniques they have explored through the text and using them independently to create imaginative narratives of their own.

It has been wonderful to see their confidence and enthusiasm grow as they bring together everything they have learned. We are looking forward to reading the finished stories!
