Tuesday 20 January 2026 Mastering Multiple Methods for Multiplication Over the past few weeks, Year 5 have truly been putting their maths skills to the test as we have ventured into the world of multiplication and not just times tables! The children have explored a range of increasingly challenging calculations, including multiplying a 4-digit number by a 1-digit number, a 2-digit number by a 2-digit number, and some have even tackled 3- and 4-digit numbers multiplied by a 2-digit number.

Wednesday 14 January 2026 Setting Sail with the Titanic All aboard!Over the next few weeks, our writing journey will be inspired by Kaspar, Prince of Cats as we dive into the fascinating and infamous story of the Titanic. We began our voyage by transforming the word Titanic into the ship itself. This creative task encouraged the children to showcase their artistic flair and powers of observation as they carefully followed a step-by-step guide to bring the ship to life.To fully immerse themselves in the world of the story, the children carried out research on the Titanic before reading the book. They have produced some fascinating non-chronological reports, confidently using headings and subheadings, historical vocabulary, and engaging sentence openers. The depth of knowledge they have already gained about this remarkable moment in history has been impressive. This topic promises to be a learning experience of truly Titanic proportions, and I cannot wait to see what else the children create as the project unfolds.Tom

Tuesday 6 January 2026 Try Time! Year 5 Tackle Tag Rugby Welcome back everyone and I hope you all had a lovely Christmas! I cannot believe we are already a third of the way through the academic year. It feels like only yesterday we were taking part in I'm in Year 5 Get Me Out of Here. This afternoon the children were introduced to their new sport for this half term: tag rugby. A few of the children had already taken part in a tag rugby competition last academic year where they won every game, so I was very excited to show the whole class just how fun this sport can be.We began by getting to know the rugby ball. The children quickly noticed its unusual shape and learned that keeping it off the ground is very important. During the warm up the children ran around the area, scoring a try when “try” was called and throwing the ball into the air and catching it when “up” was shouted.Next, we focused on the correct passing technique. Friday 21 November 2025 Dissection and Reflection We have been having a cracking time in our ‘Living Things' science topic. As part of the KS2 curriculum the children are learning to identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants and to understand how plants grow and reproduce. On Wednesday they researched and created a labelled diagram of a flowering plant. They studied each feature closely and explained its job. For example the petals attract insects for pollination and the ovaries produce seeds that will one day become new plants. The children were very relieved to learn that plants do all this hard work without needing a packed lunch.
