Thursday 21st May 2020

Good morning class 2, welcome to Thursday’s learning at home.

English task

Today you are going to start to write your innovated version of ‘The Elves and the Shoe Makers’.  I expect your new story has a different title by now.  We are really looking forward to reading them.  Use your innovated story map created yesterday to guide you through your story writing using lots of story language in your writing.  As you begin to write your story remember the every time tool kit: Capital letters for new sentences and proper nouns (the names of people and places), full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, neat handwriting and finger spaces.  Use the original story to check tricky spellings, have your best guess using your phonic knowledge or try to remember the spellings for tricky words we have learnt.  Don’t worry if you don’t get the whole story written today.  We have allowed some time tomorrow to finish and edit your story.  Take your time to do the best writing you are capable of.

Arithmetic task

Let’s keep practising counting back in threes.  Today, shuffle your number cards and lay them out face down except number 36.  Put number 36 the right way up ready to create the counting back in threes sequence.  Now take turns with a partner to find the next number by turning over one number card,  If you find the correct number place it next to the number in the sequence and have another go.  If you did not find the correct number, play passes to your partner.  Can you remember where the next number is? When you have the correct sequence laid out practise saying the numbers back from 36.

Maths task

Here are the answers to yesterday’s review tasks:

We have come to the end of the unit on volume and with only two days until the half term holiday it is time to try something different today.  As you know, after half term we will be directing you to the BBC daily lessons.  In preparation, let’s have a look at one of this week’s lessons.  Follow the link to learn all about using arrays to calculate multiplication.  There’s lots to do so choose what’s right for you.

Topic Task – Wriggle and Crawl – Whose Baby?

Have a look at the attached pictures of baby and adult minibeasts, including ladybirds, worms, earwigs, moths, woodlice and spiders and compare the adults with their young.  Which look similar to their adult and which look completely different? Group the animals according to whether or not the babies look like their parents, you could do this by drawing pictures in your writing book or on a piece of paper.

Then find out more about the life cycle of your favourite minibeast. Ladybirds have a very similar life cycle to butterflies but some have very different life cycles,  why do you think this might be?  Draw the life cycle of the minibeast you have researched.  You could do it like this:

Interestingly, woodlice lay eggs, which they keep in a brood pouch under their body. The eggs hatch in the brood pouch and the pale, tiny woodlice stay there until they have moulted several times and are better equipped to survive. Some woodlice species stay close to their babies until they reach adulthood. Minibeasts that have evolved to go through complete metamorphosis, such as butterflies and ladybirds, have a significant survival advantage, because adults and larvae are so different, they have different predators and do not compete for the same food.
