Year 4 Get Energised!⚡

This term in Year 4, we’ve been sparking curiosity (and a lot of excitement!) as we explored the electrifying world of electricity. From building circuits to testing mysterious materials, the classroom has been buzzing with discovery.

The children learned how to create a complete circuit using wires, bulbs, batteries, and switches. There were plenty of “aha!” moments (and a few “why isn’t it working?!” ones too) as they discovered that electricity only flows when the circuit is complete

We turned into mini scientists and investigated which materials allow electricity to pass through (conductors) and which block it (insulators). Using simple circuit setups, the children tested everyday objects - some results were surprising!

  • Conductors: metals like paperclips, coins, and foil
  • Insulators: materials like plastic, rubber, and wood

There was lots of excitement when the bulb lit up and plenty of resilience when it didn’t

Questions to Ask at Home

Keep the learning going with these quick questions:

  • What makes a complete circuit?
  • What components can you name?
  • What is an insulator?
  • What is a conductor?
  • Can you name some materials that are good conductors?
  • What materials are good insulators?
